Cinematographer
Producer, Director
Educator and Researcher
Digital Restorer
Emeritus President of the Czech Society of Cinematographers

Marek Jícha was born in České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia, on December 26, 1959. Since 1960, he has lived in Prague with his parents. After completing primary school in Alžírská Street, Prague 6, he began training as an optical instrument mechanic at the DRUOPTA PRAHA cooperative, which repaired and manufactured cameras and binoculars. During this time, he also worked as a demonstrator at the Observatory and Planetarium in Prague on Petřín Hill, serving as a popularization worker. He participated in many theoretical and practical seminars at various observatories in Czechoslovakia and conducted several practical astronomical observations for an international astronomical network based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

After interrupting his apprenticeship, he began studying at a Prague gymnasium (secondary school) on Arabská Street, specializing in computer programming and operations. He graduated with a high school diploma and a programmer’s certificate in 1980.

Since he was already intensely interested in film at that time, he decided to gain some practical experience in the film industry. He worked at Krátký film Praha as a camera assistant and at Zpravodajský film at Barrandov, where he assisted cinematographers such as Pavel Vaska, Jiří Jelínek, Jan Špáta, Jan Malíř, Vladimír Lorenc, Svatopluk Malý, Rudolf Milič Jr., and Martin Šec. He gained essential assistant experience with 35mm cameras on various types of documentary films.

In 1986, he was accepted into the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Faculty of Film and Television, majoring in Cinematography. He experienced the so-called “Velvet Revolution of 1989” during his studies. He studied under the guidance of professors such as Jaroslav Kučera, Jiří Macháně, Jan Kališ, and others. After completing his studies, he filmed two graduation films and received a degree with the title Magister of Art – MgA.

In the following years, he began working as an independent cinematographer and became a founding member of the film company LAMPA film PRAHA. He primarily filmed for Czech Television but also worked for other European broadcasters and private domestic and international producers. He mostly shot feature films, full-length documentary projects, music videos, and experimental art projects. He also worked as an editor on several projects.

Since 1995, he has been a full member of the Czech Society of Cinematographers (AČK), and in 1999, he became a member of the AČK presidium. He represented AČK as a contact person in IMAGO – the European Federation of Cinematographers. In this role, he participated in international conferences and represented Czech cinematographers in negotiations among European cinematographers on copyright issues and was a member of IMAGO’s technology committee. In 2012, he was elected president of the Czech Society of Cinematographers, a position he held until 2024. As the emeritus president of AČK, he is active in the field of digital restoration of films from the so-called golden fund of Czech cinematography and advocates for the use of certified DRA (Digitally Restored Authoritative) methodology.

In 2003, he also began his teaching career. He taught cinematography at FAMU in Prague, led year-long seminars, and introduced a new specialized course called “Camera Eye.” In 2005, he was appointed to a full-time position as the deputy head of the cinematography department under Prof. Jaromír Šofr. He took over the department leadership in 2005. In 2006, he earned the title of Associate Professor, and in 2012, he was awarded the title of Professor. He also taught in English at FAMU International and for institutions such as American University Washington D.C. (AU), CET program, NY University (NYU), Syracuse University (SU), Yale University (YU), Emerson University (EU), as well as through FAMU International Academic Programs and at Anglo-American University (AAU). Additionally, he participated in the education of cinematographers at FAMO in Písek,  Silesian University in Opavaand at JAMU in Brno.

He has served as a jury member at film festivals and was a member of the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) and the European Film Academy (EFA).

Since 2013, he has been the lead researcher of the NAKI AMU/NFA project, which focuses on the Methodology of Digitizing the National Film Archive, and he is a co-creator of the DRA (Digitally Restored Authoritative) Method. He was a member of the expert restoration group for the first digital restorations of films such as Marketa Lazarová, The Firemen’s Ball, All My Compatriots, Closely Watched Trains, and many others. He theoretically and practically founded the new profession of digital restorer. After successfully completing this research project in 2017, with a budget of 52 million CZK, he published seven internationally certified DRA methodologies according to this research plan. In 2018, he began working as the head of the Digital and Film Laboratory at the Center for Consulting and Analytical Services (CPA) at FAMU Studio in Klimentská Street. There, he established a certified laboratory film and digital projection facility for further research activities. Together with cinematographer Jaromír Šofr and the project team from NAKI – Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he worked as the responsible digital restorer on the digitization of films Radúz and Mahulena, directed by Petr Weigl for Czech Television, and Place de la Concorde by Étienne-Jules Marey for the National Technical Museum. In the following years, he worked as a digital restorer on a large number of other films for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
